A Little History Behind Texas Dar
Kari wants to be a Famous Writer, I've got a good start for ya, Kari !
Some Happy Times & Some Not So Happy !
It all started back when I was in 4th grade. Mom played a flatop guitar (Gibson Hummingbird ) and a 1918 Honner 120 Bass Accordian. After bugging her to get out the music makers and play them, she said,,,,,,,Would You Like to Learn How to Play Them? And we were off, onto something that is still going today. After teaching me to play the Honner & Gibson, I got a brand new 12 Bass Accordian for Christmas .Now We're getting some-where! Mom let me take the flat-top to school, and I played it under the ole Oak Tree at recess, and lunch. There was a couple kids that would stick around and listen! And it wasn't long before we were doing songs on the accordians together. I played the eazy parts, and mom played what I wished I could play, and within a years time I was too. Well, we moved to Milwaukee Wis. and mom and step-dad thought I should get lessons. Okkkkkkkkkk, after the 5th lesson, the teacher told mom that you can forget about me, all I do is play a song and Dar has it down good enought to know what it is in 30mins. Anybody that can play by ear,,,,,,I'm only holding him back. Come back when it's time to learn to read music, and I can be of help. Well, that never happened. (Why Read Music, when ya can hear it&play it !)(Da !) Soooooooooooooo, again im back to playing with mom on the accoridans and learing to play country music. All mom listened to was WOKY Country. And it wasn't long till I was playing Johny Cash. I learned to play "I Walk the Line", "Folsom Prison Blues", "I Still Miss Someone", real quick. Then came ELVIS !,,,,,,,Mom said ok to painting the flat-top GOLD of all colors,a nd I glued 2 caps from my tubes of BB's, so it looked like I had a Electric Guitar. (((( Hey, back then it was Just-an-ol-Guitar.))))))), Little did we know that it was worth a Penny-or-Two, and the Honner was a antique already! Then Hell came crashing down. I had to go live with my dad in Stevans Point Wis. Mom sent my Accordian with me, and kept the Gold HummingBird. Well,June made my Accoridian go away shortly after I got there and I was afraid to say anything to dad or I'd gotton a hell-of-a-whippen from her if he found out she threw it in the dumpster on me. She hated everything about me being Lyle's Kid, and I got a whippen for almost everything I did. Forgot to throw my socks in the hamper, out came the whip! Although I had one realy nice day, when June suprised us all with Dar's favorite dessert,,,,,,Why, she said that Dar didn't do anything wrong that day. (No Whippin !) WoW, 1 day off from the Devil HERSELF & Cake ! Wasn't long till I was back by my mom. Now Enter the Beatles,,,,,,,,,,I started marching band in 7th grade, and by mid year, I had a polka drum set that mom &I recovered with Contac-Paper and I was Hip!!!! Quit marching band cuz I didn't want to take the time to learn how to read music. (Where Did I Hear That Before !) and started a Rock-Country Band. Called it The Barron's. With a Black Bass head, with our name in Gold Glitter. WoW, I was Cool back then. Cuz we played 50-60's rock in school and in my garage with the whole neighborhood in my yard, and country in my guitar player dad's bar.Smokey's Tap. All of our parents had to come with us so we could get in and play when Steve's dad's Country Band took a break, the kid's got up for 30-45 mins. We got to do that 2 times a night, and thought we were on top of the World. Then,we move to Weyauwega Wis. (Enter Cousin Phil Annenson) He's got himself a Fender Twin-Reverb, and a Fender Strat) Well it didn't take long to get a brand new set of drums. ( I traded the old set for a 1960 Impala Rag-Top, 348,with 3 Duce's & 4 Speed.) I-WAS-COOL NOW! And we named the band Sound's Unitied. I met Ann at the Den, a hall behind a bar in Manawa, playing Rock for kids our age. The Country Bands played up front in the bar. Yup,I played in the bar just a few years from that point too. 1970, Well, then came marriage. Put the drums away. Wasn't long before I was playing drums for The Midnighters, from Appelton Wis. Played for 13 yrs. In that time I played for Rt. 5, a country band from Waupaca,f or about 2 yrs. in amoungst the 13 yrs. with The Midnighters. The All New Show on TV, Hee Haa! had just started up and was on tour in our area, when their drummer was killed in a wreck .Some how they got my name and called me to come on the road with them. Little did I know they spent the off season in a little town called Branson Mo. Well, after the guilt trips of leaving Ann & Fay at 2yrs .with mommy going to pop with the imfoumas JR in 4 mos., I told them I'm Staying with the Midnighters. They talked me out of it. (Will Never Know What Would of Happened to Dar,i f He Took the job with the Hee Haa Show) Ann said go, and I'll move as soon as ya get to Nashville, and then to where ever that Branson town is. Well,i n 1982 New Years Eve Night, was the end of the Midnighters, and on the Road with Nashville Recording Artist Bobby Darren &T he Drifters. Ernest Tubb, told me back in 1980 on his tour bus, to chase my dreams, and don't let anybody tell me I Can't Do It. If ya die along the way, ya's done what ya wanted to do all yr life anyways. And one night coming home from Nashville, driving the bus through the Loop of Chicago, I told Dar,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,It's Now or Never. Sooooooooooooooooo, in the closet the drums went.I took my amp, mic, guitar,a nd called Gary at the bowling alley and said I'll give ya $20. if ya let me set up and play. Come and play and we'll see what happens. 2nd. time I got $20., and Jeff started coming along and running the light's! (Reamber those day's Pal !) Well, it wasn't long and Jeff told his mom that he thought it would be cool playing bass for dad. Christmas, and Jr got a new Peavey Bass. And in a few day's Dar & Son played our first gig at Jay's Natitical Inn, on Feb 27th. of 1998. Then one night when I was having trouble with the girl key board player, (Husban Randy kept picking fights in the bar) Ann said, I know how the songs go! Ya think I could sing the girl songs, and we started something that grew & grew & grew, till I had 12 people in the show. Well,t hen I realised I'm getting to old for Nashville, sooooooooooooooo put JR in the spot light and live my dreams through him. That didn't happen either. So sell the house, move to Branson Mo. ( Oh, my mom told my dad to sell that ole accordian, and he got $100. for it.S ure wish I had it back today.) Well Box Car Willy told me back stage in the 80's that he was going to buy a thearter down there and come off the road. Dar,they're coming to you ,and we don't have to beat up our buses on the road. Okkkkkkkkkkkkkk, I'll remember that. So, in 1993 we sold our big house and moved into the bus and in 7-17-93 we parked the bus in Branson Mo. Well, in 3 mos. I called Stone & Taney Co. (Toy's-R-Us-Mo.) You don't even need to go to the show's to have a blast down here. AND, winter is almost NOT ! We get a little snow and in 3-10 day's it'a all gone and back in the 40's. I can get used to that, real quick. Think how many times I pushed that bus for 3-4 day's in 10-20 below and 3 shows. WoW ! Soooooooooooooo,l et's get us a Thearter,,,,,,,,,,,,Okkkkkkkkkk, what do you mean I need $5,000.000.dollars to finance myself for 3 yrs. Doing the math,,,,,,,,Yup, 5 Mill, and in 3 yrs. I either have the buses in my parking lot, or I'm broke, and needing a day-job! Well then we bought a BOAT! And it wasn't long that pickin at the dock with 20 hands clapping was just about as good as 20,000 hands clapping. And going home from the boat,,,,,,lets see, how many shows did the Country Tonight Show do while we were at the dock having a Blast???????? Maby I don't want a Theater in Branson.I f I had the money,,,,,, Yes, but I'm way to late for a guy with big dream's and a plan for somebody to put up the money. Then the Lyme's started to get me again and in 1998 I had open heart surgery, and got a new heart valve. I was passing out for no reason and we found out it's leaking and the other valve was clogged and almost shut.. It was a recalled valve because it's defective !!!!!!!! And you put it in me a year after the recall ! I was fired the next day from my truck driving job. I hauled gas & diesel fuel. Well, now DOT, and FAA won't pass my physical to drive for anybody. And getting back into flying is out also. But I can still fly a Power Parachute Airplane with Floats from the Dock. 2 toys at the same place-Cool ! But I used all the money we got for the tour bus for Med's for the Lyme's. So, no airplane again, but we do have a kick-ass-cool cabin & 6 Kitty Cat's. Could of had a nice plane though ! But better to spend it on Med's trying to get a little better, than dying with a smile on my face crashing in the Ozark's. We moved out of the bus in 12-08-2000 and into a new log cabin. Soooooo, lets just settle for the recording Studio & maybe sell some CD's. ( OK, Ya gotta give the first 1,000 away to every one ya know first, then maby sell a few ! ) So, I've got 3-4 more song's to go for the 2nd CD, and the jacket & lables and it's on it's way to our fans. My Tigggggggger-Cup is Empty, and it's 11:15pm Dar Out !
